A Ugandan Perspective – Key Highlights from the Patriotism, Governance & Economic Development Workshop

On Wednesday, 26th March 2025, over 80 young Ugandans gathered at the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Conference Hall for a transformative Training Workshop on Patriotism, Governance, and Economic Development, under the theme: A Ugandan Perspective.

A Morning of Insight and Vision The day kicked off at 7:30 AM with a hearty breakfast and warm arrivals with a little delays due to the Wednesday heavy morning downpour all over the city, The gradual arrival set the tone for an intellectually stimulating experience. At 8:30 AM, the Executive Director of UCC delivered a powerful keynote that emphasized the role of communication, information access, and civic engagement in shaping Uganda’s development agenda.

Understanding Government Systems.

Mr. Ronald Segawa. took the audience through an enlightening session on how government works. He broke it down into simple, digestible concepts, starting with: The State: Defined by territory, sovereignty, and people, administered by three core arms: Executive – Implements laws and governs daily affairs. Legislature – Crafts and passes laws. Judiciary – Interprets the laws and ensures justice. Participants walked away with a clearer understanding of the machinery behind government operations, power distribution, and the vital importance of civic participation.

The State of Uganda’s Economy.

Dr. Sam Mugume Koojo, from the Microeconomics Department at the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (MoFPED), presented a detailed breakdown of the current economic landscape. Key topics included:
    Fiscal Performance
    Tax Revenue Trends
    Debt Sustainability Analysis
A strategic shift from sector-based approaches to program-based planning, highlighting initiatives like:
    Emyooga (boosting human capital)
    Parish Development Model (PDM) (supporting agro-industrialization)
He also addressed financial inclusion, a critical issue for youth access to credit and capital—highlighting ongoing challenges and opportunities.

Patriotism in Action

In an engaging and thought-provoking session, Major General Henry Masiko who explored the Role of Citizens in Promoting Patriotism. He introduced participants to the “Five Thinking Questions”:
  1. What?
  2. Why?
  3. Who?
  4. When?
  5. Where?
  6. These questions are not just philosophical tools but practical frameworks for national consciousness, critical thinking, and civic duty.
    Major general stated. He challenged young Ugandans to reflect deeply on their role in building a better Uganda.

    Celebrating Youth Potential

    As the workshop drew to a close, Certificates of Participation were awarded to all attendees
    This was a meaningful gesture recognizing their commitment to civic learning and national development. More importantly, the certification enhances professional growth by providing credible acknowledgment of their engagement in the fields of governance, patriotism, and economic development.

    This workshop wasn’t just about theory—it was about awakening patriotism, understanding the state and its systems, and embracing our individual role in development.
